Dear colleague:

 

PrEP uptake is slowly moving forward around the globe. In some cases it is being implemented as part of a governmental decision, while in others, It is the initiative of potential users and their communities, as well as ​of ​champions among health providers, ​what play​s​ a ​key ​role. This seems to be the case in Spain, where, as in other European countries, cost issues represent a barrier at this time, but new opportunities may be emerging​.​

In our upcoming webinar, scheduled for Thursday 25 May at 9h (Mexico City, Panama City, Lima)​ 10h ​(New​ York), 11h (Brasilia). 16h (Barcelona). We will have Dr. Pep Coll and Mr. Michael Meulbroek presenting medical and community perspectives​, respectively,​ on:

Access to PrEP in Spain: Challenges and Ongoing Efforts

 

We are sure at the case of Spain will help identify and start the discussion on issues that may be relevant to other realities.

Pep Coll

Pep Coll, MD is the Clinical Cohorts Coordinator of the HIVACAT Programme (Project for the development of HIV vaccines) at the irsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute, and physician at the HIV Unit, Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol, Badalona. He collaborates in the recruitment and follow up of several cohorts (HIV acute infections, controllers, rapid progressors, HESN), and he have conducted cohort studies of HIV-uninfected men who have sex with men (MSM), in collaboration with a community based organization (BCN Checkpoint). Another of his fields is the Human Papillomavirus, collaborating in the programme for the prevention of anal cancer in HIV-infected patients. Dr. Coll is currently focused on strategies for prevention of HIV (including PrEP) and other STI among at-risk MSM in Barcelona, in collaboration with BCN Checkpoint.

 

Michael Meulbroek

Michael Meulbroek Chair of Projecte dels NOMS-Hispanosida. Michael was born in Amsterdam in 1959, and has lived in Barcelona, Spain, since 1986, where he was diagnosed with HIV. In 1993 he co-founded Projecte dels NOMS-Hispanosida, one of Spain’s most important HIV/AIDS community-based organizations. He is also a treatment counselor and educator within INFOTRAT, a peer focused information and education program for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIVA). In 1998 co-founder of ATOS (Association for Organ Transplants to persons living with HIV), an organization which promotes access for people with HIV and HCV co-infection to the Organ Transplant program, resulting in the first liver transplant in 2002. His latest project in 2006, has been the implementation of the BCN Checkpoint, a community based centre of HIV and STI detection for Men who have Sex with Men and development of community research. Michael is also member of the European AIDS Treatment Group, community member of the INSIGHT Network and HIVACAT.
